Cleaning and sanitizing our house is something that needs to be done, whether we like it or not. The problem is, many of the most common household cleaning sprays and wipes contain harmful ingredients. They can contain chemicals like formaldehyde, PFAS and PFCS. These chemicals can be released into the air, possibly causing some health concerns.
Another issue is, while we’re using these products in our homes, indoor air can have 2-5 times as much air pollution compared to outside air. Since we’re spending so much time in our homes, not to mention overnight, this is concerning.
The good news is there are natural ways to clean your home just as effectively, without the use of harmful chemicals. Even better, you can make them yourself which also saves money!
Enter: tea tree oil. Tea tree essential oil is something most people have heard of. You’ll see it mentioned in some beauty products for the use of controlling acne. This is just one of its uses!
Tea tree oil, or Melaleuca alternifoli, has antiviral, antibacterial and antifungal properties. This makes it a great option for cleaning and disinfecting!
Tea tree oil is quite easy to find, and can be found in stores like Whole Foods or your local health food stores. I recommend getting your tea tree oil from places like these to make sure it’s of a higher quality.
To make your own cleaner, you’ll need:
– A quart-sized spray bottle (an easy find at most stores- I got mine at Target)
– White vinegar
– Pure tea tree essential oil
– and a measuring cup. That’s it!
Add all of the ingredients into the spray bottle and shake well to combine. You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil scent if you’d like.
Notes
Important note: tea tree oil is toxic when ingested. This also goes for pets. Keep your cleaner and tea tree essential oil out of the reach of children and pets.
